Tokyo Taxi

Ninety-three-year-old director Yoji Yamada, with eyes that have seen the world, once again captures the most minute details of Tokyo's street life. This time, Takuya Kimura isn't a hero dominating the screen, but a taxi driver, weighed down by his daughter's tuition and high rent. His life is like that old taxi, barely running, showing signs of wear and tear everywhere. Then, one day, he picks up a gentle, somewhat lonely elderly woman. She's heading to a nursing home in Kanagawa, but before leaving Tokyo, she makes a seemingly whimsical request: she wants to visit a few places. The wheels turn, passing through the quaint streets of Shibamata, then skimming past the blue skies of Hayama. This journey, initially just a means to make a living, transforms into a farewell about the dignity of life, through the old woman's sighs and stories. Koji, played by Kimura, sees in the rearview mirror that elegant figure, having experienced ups and downs, finding his taut nerves easing little by little. Those stories from the past, like ghosts from old film reels, gently overlap the present hardships in this narrow car.

This is absolutely the most healing film for anxiety this year, so slow it's like a long poem, yet every word hits home. Director Yamada is a master at infusing the most profound human touch into what seems like an ordinary everyday account. Watching Kimura Takuya and Baisho Chieko together is like witnessing a baton being passed in the Japanese film industry. The former top male idol now portrays an ordinary person's sweat-filled hardships, while Baisho Chieko only needs a look to let you feel the quiet goodness after years of experience. The film doesn't deliberately try to stir emotions; it feels like someone handing you a steaming cup of roasted tea in the middle of the night. It tells you that life may be full of trivial matters, but there are always moments that make you feel that this world is worthwhile. This dialogue that spans generations captures a long-lost warmth from the cold iron forest of Tokyo. If you've been feeling too tired lately and can't find your direction, you really should watch this taxi slowly driving under the setting sun, and listen to the stories being carried away by the wind.
